Extortion is a major security issue for LGBTQ+ and men who have sex with men in Kenya which has resulted into financial losses as well as psychological trauma. Sometimes, SOGIE HRDs fall victim to blackmail and extortion either due to their current work or for other unrelated reasons.
Extortion can only take place when the extortionist has leverage to use against you ,it is therefore important that you secure your information and personal details, avoid having any data ,photos or information that can be used against you in your phones, laptops, wallets and so on. This would help protect you from extortion by people unknown to you. Posting too much information or photos on social media platforms too can be used to aid extortion. The more you disseminate information about yourself the more the risk of you being extorted.
